Spirulina is a blue-green algae, also known as a superfood or "food of the future". They are essentially photosynthetic cyanobacteria. They get their name from the blue pigment they contain, phycocyanin (from the Greek “kyanos” – “blue”). It not only adds color to the product, but also has anti-inflammatory properties. In the many centuries of its existence, the alga has acquired a unique biochemical composition that no longer occurs in nature.
Spirulina is 60% protein, twice as much as meat. This is the very protein containing eight amino acids that humans get from food. In terms of protein, the product even surpasses beans, peas, chickpeas, beans and lentils. Spirulina also contains fatty acids that are important for the body. For example, omega-6 helps the reproductive system and reduces the sensation of pain and inflammation. In addition, the product contains many other valuable substances: 18 amino acids, phytochemicals, copper, iron, manganese, potassium and B vitamins.
When we talk about spirulina as a superfood, it is very different from other products (vegetables, fruits, berries). For example, spirulina contains more beta-carotene, which is later converted to vitamin A, than carrots or pumpkin. In addition, the product contains about 70% vegetable proteins (pure protein), ie its nutritional value is several times higher than that of nuts, legumes and green vegetables.
